Wedding Wednesday: Choosing Your Menu

Hi friends & happy #WeddingWednesday once again! I hope you are liking this series so far! Today comes one of the most argued topic of my wedding day: dinner.

DISCLAIMER: I was lucky enough for my dad to have the ability to cater my wedding. I know this isn’t quite the deal for most people, but you still have flexibility in who you hire and what you hire them for. That being said, let’s get on with it!

Our dinner was a….. FAJITA BAR!

We chose to have Chicken Fajitas, Steak Fajitas, and Veggie Fajitas with all the toppings on the side so you could build your own. Our sides were a Garden Salad, Chips & Guacamole, and Chips & Salsa! I wish we would have gotten photos of the toppings because they were beautiful! We put them in clear glass bowls. The ingredients were so bright and vibrant, it looked amazing!

(our poor little sign got a little messed up, but it was still so cute!)

I cannot even tell you the fight I put up to get my dinner menu approved by, nope not my venue, my father! He is more on the traditional side and believes that weddings should be a typical meat, starch, vegetable kind of menu. Having diet restrictions (gluten), I wanted to be able to truly enjoy my main course and have something different and fun. Todd & I indulge in Mexican food at least once, and sometimes multiples times, a week. My dads restaurant serves fajitas and tacos at the restaurant and usually sets up a build-your-own bar at parties it caters. I wanted all that but elevated. A high-end fajita station. He fought with me for weeks until he finally gave into my wishes (thanks dad!) and it ended up working out so perfect. Everyone LOVED their food and how different it was from most weddings.

Now, I know you all don’t have a family member who can cater the wedding for you. However, you DO have a say in what your menu looks like. Some venues have a specific caterer you are required to use, and we actually said no to multiple venues because of this. We wanted freedom, even before we decided to have my dad do it. When touring venues make sure you ask about outside catering and if they only allow one specific caterer, be sure to look at a menu before signing any contracts. Food is IMPORTANT at a wedding, and if its a buffet (like mine was) people have to wait
a long time to eat it — make sure it’s worth the wait (sorry again table 16…).

My sweet dad decided that if we were going to have fajitas, they were going to be the best fajitas. He flew in corn tortillas from San Diego!

Here are some other catering options we explored:

  • Food Trucks – SO COOL. I looooved this idea because, as a guest, you have SO many options. It also was more casual and affordable which I thought was awesome!
  • Wood-fire Pizza Oven – seriously looooved this idea. We are huge pizza fans so this one would have totally been amazing. This was something that can be done quickly which i liked because each pizza only takes a few minutes.

Whatever your menu, make sure it is a representation of you and what YOU enjoy! If you love traditional – go traditional! If you love pizza – serve pizza! If you want to do a burger & fry late night snack – DO IT! It’s YOUR day, let it be a representation of you!

I hope this helps those planning a wedding! And if you are a guest at a wedding, keep in mind that wedding menu’s are rapidly changing and to embrace that change and not give the bride & groom a hard time about the food – trust me, it’s the last thing they need.

Be sure to pin this post & the bridesmaid gifts post if you are going to be planning a wedding any time in the future!

Speaking as one guest who was at Table 16, I can honestly say it was well worth the wait! Everything was delicious and fresh and beautiful all the way to the last table. Everything about your wedding was perfect!
