Typical wedding cake is not good. There. I said it. Most guests don’t even touch the cake and $250-$700 goes wasted. We had wedding cake- but it was just for show and allowed us to be able to have photos cutting a cake and allowed me to be able to enjoy some dessert (it was gluten free). Don’t get me wrong, there are exceptions to this rule. But for the most part, a typical wedding cake, whether left naked or covered in fondant is dry and unappetizing.
My cake was an exception to this rule. If you are local and gluten free and/or vegan (which I am not) you truly cannot go wrong with Bunnie Cakes. My husband and I spoke about our cake multiple times on our honeymoon- it was that good. We still reminisce on it from time to time. It doesn’t taste like it’s missing anything being that it’s gluten free and vegan, but it is actually INCREDIBLE. Another exception to the rule, which a friend of mine had at her wedding, is Nothing Bundt Cakes. They unfortunately don’t currently have gluten-free options, but their cakes are seriously incredible. Back in my pre-GF stage, I could kill like 3 little bundtinis at a time. Lastly, if you are an east-coaster, Publix cakes! Have you ever had a Publix cake that WASN’T fluffy and delicious?
If none of those options stand out to you, and/or they aren’t available to you, scratch the cake. I know, crazy… But seriously, you will save hundreds of dollars on something that will sit at your guests tables while they are dancing. My biggest advice: be different. I know that alternative desserts are becoming more and more popular, but put that Pinterest board into action! My husbands all time favorite dessert/food is donuts. Guess what our guests had for dessert? You guessed it: DONUTS. The feedback? INSANE. People were obsessed with the donut bar. It was not only GORGEOUS (shout out to my amazing planners for executing my vision perfectly while I was busy getting married and stuff), but it was also delicious. People even raced to the donuts before they even got their food- we even had to ask the DJ to tell people to chill out on the donuts and wait a little bit, haha! I’ve seen such fun desserts at weddings nowadays that are so much yummier and exciting (and likely much cheaper) than traditional cake. The best part was that the donuts only cost me around $200. That is a third of what a cake would have cost in Miami.
For those who are going to ask about the decor of our beautiful dessert table, I wanted to go ahead and answer that right away. So many people have asked me about the decor on this table and I am so pumped to officially share it!
- Square cake stands — HomeGoods (I wish you could shop online, but if you browse the store a few times, I promise you will find something!
- Assorted tiered stands — HomeGoods
- Burlap “S” — I’ve had this for years, but I believe Bealls
- Wood crates — belonged to my planner, but can get from Walmart and stain them
- “We Decided on Forever” sign — Ross, similar here
- Cake stand for our cake — Michael’s, unavailable online, check in stores!
- Clear glass vases — Dollar Tree
- Rose gold donut label stands — Amazon
- “Finally” cake topper — Etsy, I bought it in “unfinished wood” and painted it rose gold
- Cake cutter + Utensils — HomeGoods, similar here
I’m so glad I was able to share this with you guys. The dessert table was one of my favorite parts of our wedding. The search for all of the items that made it up took some time, but if you really look and look often, you too will have luck!
Happy eating!
xoxo,
Savannah Jayne
